Inlays & Onlays
Inlays and onlays are approaches used to help restore teeth, improve oral health, and create better smiles. The chosen method of treatment will depend on the severity of the issue. An inlay or onlay is typically used for mild to moderate forms of tooth decay, to fix a cracked tooth, or in a situation when a crown is not a good choice, though dental bonding is sometimes used in these methods, too. The primary difference between an inlay and an onlay is an inlay bonds to the center of a tooth, while an onlay extends further to the cusps. During both procedures, an impression is taken and a lab creates the permanent fixture. While the lab makes the permanent device, we will fit you with a temporary one.
Materials like porcelain and composite resin may be used to create inlays and onlays, and they have many benefits. They match a tooth’s natural color, making them almost invisible. They react similarly to your natural teeth, so they stay in place and last much longer than a metal filling. Furthermore, during either process, we have the ability to restore a decayed or damaged area while preserving the maximum amount of a healthy tooth to promote good oral health.
Especially when used in conjunction with CEREC digital technology, these dentistry procedures can create whiter smiles and promote good oral health by protecting teeth from further decay or discoloration. In turn, patients feel better about their smile, which can boost confidence and self-esteem. And with CEREC, we can often place an inlay, onlay, or crown in just one visit.
