Our patients at Brookside Dental Care seek out sedation dentistry for a variety of reasons, including heightened fear or anxiety over going to the dentist, needing several treatments completed at once, and lack of time in their busy schedules. With sedation dentistry, dental visits do not have to induce feelings of stress or anxiety, and many procedures can be completed in just one visit, which saves time and money. Sedation dentistry induces a sense of relaxation in the patient. At Brookside, we offer three levels of sedation to best meet our patients’ needs.
The first type of sedation is nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas.” When nitrous oxide combined with oxygen is administered, patients breathe in the gas mixture for a few minutes to create a feeling of relaxation or euphoria. This often proves a good approach because it works quickly. Dr. Hadian and his skilled team also have complete control over the level of gas administered and may increase or decrease the amount needed, making it a safe and effective choice for a relaxed dental visit. Nitrous oxide is a good option for patients who do not want to take a longer-lasting drug, as the body rids itself of nitrous oxide within three to five minutes after the supply is switched to pure oxygen. Unlike sedation using oral medication or using IV sedation methods, patients may drive themselves home after receiving nitrous oxide sedation.
The second type of sedation we offer is conscious oral sedation through the administration of an oral medication. This is a safe and FDA-approved method that helps patients feel calm. When conscious sedation seems the most beneficial route to a successful dental visit, patients will be given a sedative in pill or liquid form sometime prior to their appointment. The medication makes patients drowsy and promotes a sense of calm. With conscious oral sedation, patients can still communicate and respond to questions Dr. Hadian and his team ask throughout the procedure. Some patients may feel the need to take a nap after their procedure. Patients should be aware that they cannot drive themselves home after using this method.
A third type of sedation offered at Brookside Dental Care is intravenous (IV) sedation, also referred to as “dental intravenous anesthesia,” or “Twilight Sedation.” Twilight Sedation helps our patients achieve a deeper level of calm and relaxation during their dental procedure, which allows us to complete more work at one time. IV sedation enables our intensely fearful patients to tolerate those dental procedures that may have been traumatic in the past. Also, memory of the dental procedure will be vague. IV sedation alleviates the anxiety associated with dental treatments. Additionally, patients are still able to respond to questions during the procedure, so they have some control over how their procedure goes. Our Twilight Sedation patients report feeling comfortable, calm, relaxed, and safe. Twilight Sedation instills a deeper state of relaxation as the sedative is introduced directly into the bloodstream of the patient. If you choose intravenous sedation, your anesthesia will be administered and constantly monitored by Dr. Hadian to ensure the safest and most beneficial dental experience. Patients will not be able to drive themselves home after IV sedation, and may feel the need to sleep for some time.
While there are various sedation methods, at Brookside Dental Care we pride ourselves on our progressive approach and continuing education when it comes to helping patients achieve maximum relaxation in the dental chair. We can tailor the type of anesthesia to each patient’s need or desire. Sedation dentistry is a great option for the elderly, the disabled, the very fearful, or the time-constrained.
We at Brookside Dental Care are here for you and want your experience to be the best and most positive possible. Knowing that sedation dentistry is available can be a great comfort to fearful patients. Feeling comfortable and safe are often the first steps in establishing and maintaining any dental health regimen. Having a calm and relaxed patient means Dr. Hadian and his team can focus on providing the best level of care in an anxiety-free environment. Because this method promotes relaxation, patients are able to sit for longer periods of time, which means we can complete more work in one visit.
Whatever the reason for a visit, those who experience apprehension around seeing the dentist, or who have time constraints that make multiple appointments difficult, now have alternatives to experience a relaxed dental experience.
